The Maharashtra State Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology was established in the year 1969, at Nagpur, with a view to impart vocational skills in cookery, bakery, and food processing. Earlier famously known as the Food Craft Institute, this Institute shifted to Pune in 1975 while continuing to offer craftsmanship courses.
Over the past five decades, the Institute has progressed significantly, building a reputation for providing quality education in hospitality and tourism with various programmes under its banner.
With fifty years of rich experience, the Institute has been a pioneer in launching various programmes in hospitality and tourism. In 2003, the Institute introduced the four-year Bachelor’s Degree Programme in Hotel Management and Catering Technology, affiliated to Savitribai Phule Pune University.
The Institute is presently the only one in the country to have launched a two-year full-time Master’s programme in Hotel Management & Catering Technology, affiliated to Savitribai Phule Pune University, which is recognized by the All India Council of Technical Education.
Well-qualified and experienced faculty, state-of-the-art laboratories like training restaurants, kitchens, dedicated housekeeping & front office labs, a research center, an assembly hall with a capacity of 100 pax, and one of the city's oldest libraries of hotel management are some of the noteworthy features of the Institute.
With this infrastructure, students get hands-on experience in the required training areas by dealing with real-time situations. The students who graduate are at par with industry expectations and hence get hired by the best hospitality and tourism brands such as Ritz Carlton, J.W. Marriott, Conrad, Westin, The Taj Mahal Palace, The Trident & Oberoi, Hyatt, The ITC group, Reliance, The Tamara Group, etc. through campus placements.
The Institute today has partnered with corporates & institutes like Rich’s, Rational, Sodexo, BKPS College of Architecture, and many others, for the exchange of technology as well as imparting training.
To fulfill the Institute’s role towards its stakeholders, it offers Education & Training Programmes for the Border Road Organisation (formerly GREF), Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC), Air Force, Sodexo, etc.
The Institute has been conducting CSR activities for the betterment of society by organizing bakery workshop sessions for specially-abled children at Bal Kanyan Sanstha for many years. Additionally, the Institute organizes a Blood Donation Camp annually in association with Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital for the past 15+ years, cleaning drives in various parts of the city, tree plantation drives every year, and more.
